03/10/2018 - New self-circulation machines in the Library

We have two new self-circulation machines in the Library and we are very excited about them! They have enhanced functions such as:

• You do not need to scan your Library barcode anymore, just tap your card on the reader
• You can check out multiple books in one go by simply stacking them on the reader
• You can get receipts for due dates or returns emailed to your university email address

Come and have a look and ask for a demonstration if you need help.

The Library is open as usual during the summer holidays but will have shorter staffed hours in the second and third weeks. Do not forget to renew your books before or during the holidays to avoid fines.

Renewing your books is easy: either do it online from anywhere by logging in to your Library account or call us on 0207 531 7333 during our staffed hours.

12/04/2018 - Changes in the Library during the spring vacations

We now have an additional self-circulation unit so that you do not need to queue for a single machine during unstaffed hours.

We have also bought additional shelves to accommodate our growing collection of books. We moved the collection around on the shelves as well, so come and talk to us if you cannot find your books.

If you are using Google Scholar to find articles, you need to change Scholar settings for a possibility of full-text access. Please log in to and use Discover (not Google Scholar) if you want to easily access full-text journal articles. While we support you with Discover, we are unable to support you with Google Scholar or guarantee full-text access to articles you find through Google Scholar.

09/11/2017 - NVivo training

Just a reminder that NVivo training sessions arranged by the Careers, Employability and Enterprise Service are coming up towards the end of the month. The session for students is on Thursday the 23^rdNovember at 13:00 in the IT Lab and the session for staff members is on Friday the 24^th November at 11:30 in the IT Lab. NVivo is a software that supports qualitative and mixed methods research.

As we are open during the holidays, you still need to renew your books. You can do this by logging in to your Library account at https://catalogue.sunderland.ac.uk/login even if you are abroad. Just a reminder that you can pay your Library book fines online using your account on the Library Catalogue. Using your Library account, you can avoid fines easily by renewing your books online from anywhere in the world even if you are on holiday.

The ability to carry out research is very important for your studies at this level, for successful assignments and dissertations as well as for improving your employability skills. A new member of staff joined us in the Library last month. Our new Library Coordinator Emma Proudley will be happy to help you with your research enquiries. You can book a one-to-one training session with her on accessing and using our Library resources. You will be seeing Emma during some of our group training sessions as well.

The Library welcomed new students this week. We delivered evening and day-time inductions introducing to students our services and resources. If you missed our inductions and do not want to wait until the catch-up sessions in February, please come to the Library on the first floor.

13/01/2017 - Succeeding at University week 9

As part of the Succeeding at University module, the Library delivered six referencing sessions throughout the week commencing 9th of January. If you missed our referencing sessions, please come and see the Librarian on the 4th floor to make an appointment (or come to the Library on the 1st floor) as assessment weeks are approaching and doing referencing properly is important to avoid plagiarism and get good marks for your work. Also, check the Research Support section of our website for more information on plagiarism and referencing.

You may have noticed that Discover, the University of Sunderland collection of subscription electronic resources, looks different. However, apart from the interface, not much has changed and the same search rules apply. If you need help or are unsure of some tools, please contact the Library for support.

25/08/2016 - Increased loan limit for undergraduate students

Due to popular demand, we have increased the number of items undergraduate students can borrow. Starting from today, undergraduates can borrow up to 8 items at a time. We hope this change will prove useful to all of you currently studying at undergraduate level.

The Library is receiving new computers for the Quiet Study area where PCs will be replaced with brand new faster models. This will make the login time shorter and allow you to use a wider range of software more easily. New PC clusters will be rolled out over the next three weeks in stages, with all computers installed by the beginning of July. 

03/06/2016 - E-portfolio training sessions

Are you interested in creating an e-portfolio to present to prospective employers? The Library delivers training sessions on how to bring together your learning and achievements and put them together in a presentable manner using the online tool provided by the University. Come and talk to the Librarian if you are interested in attending a training session on how to create an e-portfolio.

It can save you a lot of time when you need to compile a reference list as it automatically does the in-text citation and the reference list for you in your assignments and dissertations. You can now use EndNote on campus computers. Come and see the Librarian for more information or if you would like to have some training.

15/04/2016 - Sample dissertations

By popular demand we have made sample dissertations available for same day loan within the building. Starting from Monday, 18th of April, borrowed sample dissertations can also be taken to group study areas on other floors of the building. Please remember that all dissertations need to be returned on the same day before the Library closes. Please make sure you do not keep any dissertations overnight as overdue charges will apply, £5.00 per dissertation per day.

We hope this change will help all students who prefer group work as opposed to doing quiet study in the Library.

14/04/2016 - Campus opening hours extended during the assessment period

The Campus opening hours are extended during the assessment period starting next Monday, 18 April 2016, from 08:30 in the morning to 20:30 in the evening Monday-Thursday and until 20:00 in the evening on Fridays. We are extending loan periods to cover your vacation over the Easter holidays. All items borrowed this week will be due back after the holidays, on or after the 4^th of April. During the vacation period, the Library will be open as usual with the exception of Easter Bank Holidays, 25^th and 28^th of March. Please remember to check your Library Account and renew any of your items.

14/12/2015 – Extended loan periods over the Christmas vacation

Over the Christmas vacation we are extending loan periods to cover the University closure. This means if you borrow or renew your items they will be due back in January 2016. The extension applies to all items borrowed after the 7^th of December. Remember to check your library account and renew any of your items.

14/12/2015 - Christmas vacation opening hours

Our opening hours will change from Monday, 21^st of December 2015. On the 21^st and 22^nd of December we will be open from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The University and the Library will be closed from the 23^rd of December to the 3^rdof January 2016. Term time hours will resume on the 4^th of January.  We wish you all happy holidays.
